Google Takes Gears Mobile

PC Magazine reports: "Google first announced the launch of Gears last May to coincide with its 2007 Developer Day. The idea behind the new beta program has been percolating for a while: taking some of the functionality of online apps offline, which simply means that when you're using a Web app, you won't lose your ability to work should something happen to your Internet connection."

After I installed this on my AT&T Tilt, I had to find an application to test it. Zoho Office offered a test platform to play with it. It's still a primitive technology, and has a long way to advance.

Tips: Understanding Data Plans: Part I

Smart Devices Central reports "'Could this be any more difficult?' That's the question that usually comes to my mind whenever I'm browsing cellular carrier sites—and, hey, I do this for a living.

Much like the old car salesman's tactic of 'protecting' his prey from the actual sale price of a car, the carriers aim to distract, confuse, and change the subject whenever it comes to data plans. You want a new smartphone? Look at all these shiny new devices. They can browse the Web, play MP3s, consolidate your e-mail, and—look—you can even watch TV on this one! And that sleek model over there is only $99."

If you though regular cellular plans were complicated, data plans can be worse. One piece of advice, get an unlimited data plan if you can afford it.
